Implementation of the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) law in Afghanistan has a long way to go, the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a report released today. Judicial and law enforcement officials have sporadically implemented the two-year-old law supporting the equality and rights of Afghan women, and the Government has not yet succeeded in applying the law to the vast majority of cases of violence against women.

Fardin Waezi photo exhibits at the British Museum and Tate Modern display in London.

UNAMA is proud to announce that the work of Fardin Waezi, one of our staff photographers, will be on display in London.

Waezi's photographs are components of two other exhibitions, Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World at the British Museum, and Burke + Norfolk: Photographs from the war in Afghanistan at theTate Modern. In total, 17 photos taken by Waezi will be exhibited. Among the shots are images of reconstruction in Kabul ten years after the fall of the Taliban regime. But it's diversity of photos of daily life that give the show it's depth and power. Among them are Waezi's photos of public celebrations of New Year, luminous images of the city's skyline and views women taking charge of their futures.

"The point of this exhibition is to show to the world a message that is the opposite of the one people often see in the media. Beyond the war and explosions there is life and culture and history," said Waezi.

The exhibit runs from May 8 to June 8, 2011.

The festival remembers the prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son when God ordered him to. this is a four day holiday in Muslim countries. During the festival Muslims who can afford to, sacrifice domestic animals, usually sheep, as a symbol of Ibraham's sacrifice. The Qurbani meat) then is distributed among family, friends and the poor. The morning of the first day follows with special prayer, "Eid prayer". Muslims pray for God's blessing.
This day also marks the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. It takes place on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. The Hajj is the Fifth Pillar of Islam and therefore a very important part of the Islamic faith. Every year more than 2million Muslims from all around the world for Mecca pilgrimage. At least once in their lives, Muslims who can afford it should make the visit the shrine, "Ka' bah" (prophet Ibrahim's made house) in Saudi Arabia.
In Afghanistan, people visit family members, relatives and teat their guests with different kinds of food, fruits and organise family picnics. On this day, families, relatives and friends who broke up, reunite, forget and forgive past differences as virtue of Eid commanded by God.

15 October, 2009 Afghanistan’s first juice concentrate factory was opened in Kabul today by The Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation & Livestock (MAIL), HE Mohammad Asif Rahimi, who called it our path to prosperity
Afghanistan’s economic future is in horticulture and value-added products such as juice concentrate, he said this factory will buy fruit from 50,000 Afghan farmers, hire hundreds of women to work in packaging, and recruit loyal customers around the world.

The $11+ million Omaid Bahar Fruit Processing Company, on the outskirts of Kabul, already has lucrative contracts for juice concentrate and whole fruits with major buyers in India and the Gulf. It is negotiating with giant companies in North America and Europe for its concentrated juices made from Afghan pomegranates, apples, melons, apricots and peaches. All its products are made to the highest international standards for hygiene and purity, on Italian, state-of-the-art equipment.
The company has already bought 210 metric tons (MT) of apples from Paktia, 30 MT of apples from Wardak, 120 MT of pomegranates from Kapisa and 200 MT of pomegranates from farmers in Kandahar. It is seeking more fruit because of expected global demand. Kabul Afghanistan Thursday, 15 October, 2009
