Implementation of the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) law in Afghanistan has a long way to go, the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a report released today. Judicial and law enforcement officials have sporadically implemented the two-year-old law supporting the equality and rights of Afghan women, and the Government has not yet succeeded in applying the law to the vast majority of cases of violence against women.

Commemoration of Massoud death in Panjshir Valley.

Thousands of Afghan people including Vice-president, Afghan ministers, VIPs and militaries, gather on September 10th 2011 at Ahmed Shah Massoud Mausoleum in Panjshir valley to commemorate the 10 year of the death of the “Afghan National Hero”. Ahmed Shah Massoud, nicknamed “The Lion of Panjshir”, was a military leader who played a significant role in driving the Soviet army out of Afghanistan. Under the government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani, Massoud became Defense Minister. After the collapse of Rabbani’s government and the rise of Taliban regime, Massoud, a Tajik, became the military leader of the Northern Alliance, a coalition of various armed Afghan opposition groups. Massoud was assassinated on Sept. 9, 2001 by two men posing as journalists. He is revered as a martyr throughout the country and especially in Panjshir valley his homeland.

To raise additional awareness about the rate of deforestation around the world, the United Nations declared 2011 the International Year of Forests.

Fardin Waezi photo exhibits at the British Museum and Tate Modern display in London.

UNAMA is proud to announce that the work of Fardin Waezi, one of our staff photographers, will be on display in London.

Waezi's photographs are components of two other exhibitions, Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World at the British Museum, and Burke + Norfolk: Photographs from the war in Afghanistan at theTate Modern. In total, 17 photos taken by Waezi will be exhibited. Among the shots are images of reconstruction in Kabul ten years after the fall of the Taliban regime. But it's diversity of photos of daily life that give the show it's depth and power. Among them are Waezi's photos of public celebrations of New Year, luminous images of the city's skyline and views women taking charge of their futures.

"The point of this exhibition is to show to the world a message that is the opposite of the one people often see in the media. Beyond the war and explosions there is life and culture and history," said Waezi.

The exhibit runs from May 8 to June 8, 2011.

Afghan Women’s working in (OPAWC) Organization of Promoting Afghan Women’s Capabilities in Kabul Afghanistan Tuesday 19 October 2010. These courses are mainly designed to empower women with earning skills like tailoring, embroidery, carpet- waving, making wooden stuff and other crafts. Two women expert have been hired to train women these skills and the students have been provided with the required tools and materials at the centre so that they could learn and practice at the same time.

The main objectives for these training courses are to empower women with the skills that could help them to stand on their feet in the term of earning. Undoubtedly, the biggest challenge for the most of the women, particularly widows is to feed their children and since they are not skilled workers, so that they can’t earn enough to run the family. Majority of the students are either house wife or unskilled workers like servant, cook and housekeeper, which paid less than $50 per month while skilled women earn $200-$300 per month.

Organization of Promoting Afghan Women’s Capability (OPAWC) is nationally registered Non Governmental and non-profit Organization in Afghanistan, it established in 1997 in Pakistan by a group of women eager to do something proactive, concrete and achievable to empower Afghan women. They volunteered their time and expertise to affect lives as soon as possible while building a framework for long term, sustainable opportunities for women to escape the vicious cycle of dependence and victimization in a male dominated and fundamentalist social structure.
OPAWC Mission is “improving the level of economic and social situation of the afghan women and establishing peace and harmony in

Afghanistan

”.

Since it inception as a registered NGO in 2003, OPAWC has strived to empower Afghan women from every perspectives including education and earning- skills, which aimed to help them stand up for their rights. OPAWC believes that women will remain enslaved and oppressed if they themselves don’t go for achieving their rights. And this noble cause requires building up their potentials and capabilities. For this reason, OPAWC major activities for women were establishing literacy classes and training courses for thousand of Afghan women in the refugee camps in Pakistan as well many provinces in Afghanistan. It also runs Health Centre in Farah Province and Orphanages both in Kabul and Jala Abad.

Vocational Training Centre in Kabul was the latest initiative by OPAWC to enhance women‘s capabilities. It was established on March 2008 and was initially planned to have classes for literacy education and vocational training such as handicrafts but due to lack of fund only three literacy classes with 90 students were opened up. And fortunately, at later stages Tuscany Region (Cospy) funded the vocational training centre and as a result two sections were established on October 2008, one for tailoring and another for embroidery and by passage of time the number of students rose to 500 in various classes of Literacy Education and Handicrafts Training Courses.

Vocational Training Centre is located in Kabul City and comprise of two sections: Literacy Education and Handicrafts Training Courses. Literacy Education has three female teachers; each teaches two shifts classes and the total number of students go to 300, all the students are female, women of 45 to 76 and the young girls of 10 to 30, most of them are widows and orphans. The subjects that are taught in this centre are: Dari (Persian), Mathematics, Basic information on child care and subjects on health, Human Right, Women s Right, violence against women and. The Literacy program was supposed to be for two years which comprised of 4 semesters, but according to the Ministry of Education in

the time for literacy class is 9 months or one year which is comprised of 2 semesters. A student has to pass the final exam to get the permission to sit in the next class and after completing class three and passed the final exam than they could get the Merit Certificate of Literacy.

Since 3years of establishment of VTC the outcome and the result have been successful.

More than 250 students have been graduated from this centre and received the Merit Certificate and around 60 students are on the way to be graduated at the end of October 2010.

2011 will mark and auspicious starting point for a spring of new decade of hope for a significant population of women who would otherwise be under the thumb of destitution?

OPAWC aim is to empower women in all the fields of life which can be a sort of help to prevent them from beholden but to keep them on their own feet and self determination.

In the field of literacy Education we hope we could extent the classes in which there should two or three classes of each section and also arrange some other courses which has been requested from students, like English course and beauty pallor which has a good incomes and further education.

In the field of Handicrafts we hope we could extend it to a system of production in order to help the trained women to earn their living, and we hope we could find good marketing and accumulates the orders from different regions.

OPAWC had had a lot of partners inside and outside of Afghanistan. But for time being we have three specific partners SAWA of Australia and Cospy of Italy and CISDA of Italy.

Afghan Theatre.

As part of the French Cultural Centre reopening, Afghan Theatre company Aftaab performed during a week of festivities that ran from the 20-23 September in Kabul. Celebrating its fifth anniversary, Aftaab staged a production of "The Miserly" by French 17th century playwright Molière. Aftaab is a multi-ethnic and mixed gender company.

International Peace Day.

International Peace Day is when the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF redouble efforts to provide health support to some of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable communities. Today in 23 urban slums and informal settlements in Kabul, UN agencies are working with the Health Department to immunize children and women against polio, meningitis, tuberculosis and other diseases. The aim is to reach over 50,000 women and children.

Sealed boxes of votes arrive in the Afghan capital Kabul, following Saturday’s countrywide parliamentary elections. Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission (IEC), which was responsible for conducting the polls, is now recording, checking and verifying the votes as part of the process of assessing the final results of the election. Provisional results are likely to be announced around 8 October, Kabul, Afghanistan, Monday, September 22, 2010.

Parliamentary Election In Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan Independent Election Commission (IEC) has sent ballot

boxes to polling centers to all provinces of Afghanistan, where there

are transportation facilities. Where there is a not transportation

facility, the IEC transports ballot boxes by donkeys, houses and etc

on Election Day (Saturday 18 September 2010). The IEC employed 3,020

District Field Coordinators, 86,575 polling staff and 2,240

contingency staff for the election process throughout the country.
