Implementation of the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) law in Afghanistan has a long way to go, the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a report released today. Judicial and law enforcement officials have sporadically implemented the two-year-old law supporting the equality and rights of Afghan women, and the Government has not yet succeeded in applying the law to the vast majority of cases of violence against women.

Fardin Waezi photo exhibits at the British Museum and Tate Modern display in London.

UNAMA is proud to announce that the work of Fardin Waezi, one of our staff photographers, will be on display in London.

Waezi's photographs are components of two other exhibitions, Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World at the British Museum, and Burke + Norfolk: Photographs from the war in Afghanistan at theTate Modern. In total, 17 photos taken by Waezi will be exhibited. Among the shots are images of reconstruction in Kabul ten years after the fall of the Taliban regime. But it's diversity of photos of daily life that give the show it's depth and power. Among them are Waezi's photos of public celebrations of New Year, luminous images of the city's skyline and views women taking charge of their futures.

"The point of this exhibition is to show to the world a message that is the opposite of the one people often see in the media. Beyond the war and explosions there is life and culture and history," said Waezi.

The exhibit runs from May 8 to June 8, 2011.

A British man has been shot dead in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

A security guard shot David Giles, of Hull, and South African Jason Bresler, before killing himself outside a DHL office, the Afghan government said.
Both men, who worked for the courier company, appear to have been in a car when they were shot on Saturday.
Afghan authorities say the motive for the attack is unclear but have refused to rule out terrorist activity.
Police carrying out an investigation have closed the DHL branch and covered a blood-splattered car at the scene.
Interior minister Mohammed Hanif Atmar said two other people were also injured in the shooting in the Sher Pur area of the city,

Fardin Waezi is one of the most outsanding photojournalists working in Afghanistan today with an archive exceeding 10,000 imgages.
Fardin Waezi was born in Kabul, and started photography with a box camera with his father when he was only seven years old.
“When the Taliban captured Kabul, one of their first assaults was against photographers. They rushed to burn my father’s wooden camera which was our sole source of income; they burned down our studio, but I saved the camera.”
Fardin, 14 at the time, hid the camera way in a secret place. He had spent all his childhood at his father’s side, taking thousands of 6x4 portraits in the streets of Kabul with his camera. He became the bread-winner for a family of 11. Eventually he took the camera from where he had hidden it and cautiously started taking ID photographs in one of the city streets. Fardin was arrested many times by the Taliban for taking pictures, but refused to stop shooting, and continued to record the real life of Afghanistan and its people.
During this time, he met an Iranian photographer, Manoocher Deghati, brother of Reza who is the founder of Aina Afghan Media and Culture Center, and consequently started his training as a photojournalist.
Fardin started studying photojournalism at AINA in 2002 and in 2004 graduated with a diploma. Since that time Fardin has worked for AINA Photo as a teacher of photojournalism and has on numerous occasions given lectures in the area of journalism at Kabul University.
Fardin Waezi is now the Director of Aina Photo Agency and is also a member of the Afghanistan Photojournalist’s Union. As a freelance photojournalist he has worked for and been published by many national and international publications and has also worked on assignments for the UN, World Bank, BBC, NATO and The French Embassy.
Fardin Waezi wants to express through his images the problems, developments and improvements taking place in Afghanistan. He is dedicated to teaching young Afghan youths the craft of photojournalism in an effort to give a voice to future generations and help heal the wounds of a people still suffering the consequences of three decades of war.

In an international competition in Spain last year, one of my pictures received third award among 200 photos from 115 countries. It was really a good achievement for me and my fellow workers and countrymen in the field. As an Afghan girl, I really feel proud to have successfully made my country the third award winning country in an international competition.

Imal Hashimi was born in the Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, in 1986. After four years away from his country in Pakistan-Peshawar, he returned under the new leadership of Hamid Karzai’s government. After passing the university entrance exam, he was thinking of becoming a journalist, but he happened to pass by a group of Austrian photographers who had come to teach photography in his university. Interested in learning different and new subjects, he joined the workshopHashimi went on to join an advanced class of photojournalism in a media center in Kabul for half a year, and another workshop organized by the UNEP. Eid al-Haja marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and is celebrated across Afghanistan for seven days. On the first day, Muslims pray in the morning and then slaughter an animal to give thanks and praise to God. On the remaining six days, Muslims spend time entertaining family and friends. Most importantly, during this time Muslims who may have been in disagreement forgive each other.

Afghan men smoke opium in an abandoned building in Kabul. Over fifty people live illegally in the building, all of them long-time opium users. Many of the men have wives and families, but have sacrificed everything for their addiction. The government of Afghanistan, with the help of foreign aid, has tried to rid the country of opium and its abundant poppy fields. The task is a difficult one, as farmers can make significantly more money growing opium than they can other crops. On the 20th of November. The whole world celebrates the day on which the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of Child. Afghanistan ratified this convention in 1994 and has expressed its commitment to fulfill rights of the children.
Children have rights to live, develop themselves through positive experiences in life and be protected from harm, violence, abuse and exploitation.
Today in Afghanistan, thousands of children are forced to work bearing the burden of financially supporting their families. They are suffering from discrimination and neglect every bay and often do not have sufficient food, health care and protection. Some of them do not get the opportunity to go to school.
On the 20th of November, 2006 the Child Rights Consortium/CRC (Aschiana , Afghanistan Demain, Children in Crisis, Enfants du Monde Droits de I Homme and Terre des Hommes) celebrates the International Child Rights Day involving children with whom it is working. The CRC aims at protecting working children and offering them opportunities to learn and develop themselves.
This date is the perfect symbolic day to gather children and have a glimpse of their daily life. The event offers the children a chance to express themselves though a variety of activities. Yet not being able to go to regular schools, these working children aer talented and they have learnt and gained skills.
These children have hopes and aspirations in life as does every child in the world. They simply need means to blossom.

Commemoration of Massoud death in Panjshir Valley.

Thousands of Afghan people including Vice-president Ahmad Zia Massoud, Afghan ministers, VIPs and militaries, gather on September 10th 2006 at Ahmed Shah Massoud Mausoleum in Panjshir valley to commemorate the fifth year of the death of the “Afghan National Hero”. Ahmed Shah Massoud, nicknamed “The Lion of Panjshir”, was a military leader who played a significant role in driving the Soviet army out of Afghanistan. Under the government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani, Massoud became Defense Minister. After the collapse of Rabbani’s government and the rise of Taliban regime, Massoud, a Tajik, became the military leader of the Northern Alliance, a coalition of various armed Afghan opposition groups. Massoud was assassinated on Sept. 9, 2001 by two men posing as journalists. He is revered as a martyr throughout the country and especially in Panjshir valley his homeland.
